The AV-4 is an integrated modular system, which incorporates the aircrew survival vest with an internal emergency evacuation lift harness and an integrated body armor protective system. The AV-4 is designed to allow the wearer the flexibility of configuring his survival system in 13 different combinations. In all combinations, the AV-4 maintains the survival vest capability and permits the wearer to upgrade protection to defeat small arms or even .50 caliber ammunition in the vital organ areas.

The AV-4, through its modular design, integrates with the various duties of both pilots and aircrew members meeting the requirements of specific areas of protection, mobility and comfort. This system provides aviation personnel with the capability to carry mission essential gear and integrates with other survival equipment such as HEEDS, various life preservers, and MOPP gear. The AV-4 is equipped with an emergency quick release point for rapid doffing of the system and a drag strap utilized for emergency egress of injured personnel.
